Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
